“Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.”
Facebook’s mission statement is focused on empowering the user by providing the technology to connect with others. All Facebook can do is provide the tools to network through their website, each individual user creates their own Facebook experience. Facebook has defiantly been effective in making the world more open and connected, their website is almost synonyms with social media and connecting through the internet.
“People use Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them.”
Their vision statement is more of what the Facebook’s founders intended their website be used for. Here they list the three major reasons people use Facebook. Posting updates about yourself and “expressing what matters to you” while at the same time “connecting with friends and family” by reading their updates also. Facebook has evolved though from just connecting with just other people to connecting with organizations and companies. Therefore users are able to “discover what’s going on in the world” by “liking” news pages, company pages, sport pages, etc.
I feel that these statements are extremely effective in conveying the purpose of Facebook. Their mission statement takes a modest view, establishing that all they can do is offer and maintain a service, while their vision statement clearly indicates that Facebook can be so much more than just a website.
